what's the best tick and flea plan

Getting a Wire Hair Doxy in Oct for tracking in Central MD and wondering what has been successful for others about flea and tick repellants? I figure drops above the shoulders but wonder what / which brands work best.
Also wonder about the advantage (if any) of giving a bath after a day of training or a long night tracking before coming back into the house.
If so what products used in the bath and how much is too often for a given product.
