If you bump the animal up then back out and wait till morning (depends on type of hit). As far as the 12 - 20 hrs that will depend on your dog. The older a track the harder it will be and will require a dog with a very good nose and ability to stay on track. There are also many other factors to think about when letting an animal lay that long. Coyotes / wolves or other varmin. What is the weather going to do, rain, wind, snow during the time you wait. There are a lot of thing that can effect a track when waiting that long. Again your dogs abilities will also dictate how long you can wait.

Robin you will need to train during the day and at night. You will not want your dog to be uncomfortable tracking at night because they are not use to it. Your flashlights will make shadows move and make things look funny to the dog, so you will need to expose them to tracking at night before the real thing.
