John Jeanneney's book, Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer can be bought from this website. To answer some of your questions, you can start a pup as soon as you get him home, just don't overdo it. The way to make a good tracking dog is to make it really, really fun for the dog. I don't know if you can train just any breed successfully, but if you are thinking of training a dog you already have, try it. It will probably work to some extent. Of course, some breeds are better suited than others.Since you live in NY, you should be able to find help.
