Posted by Ernie on 6/2/2007, 2:03 pm Our station transmitter and control board was in a metal trailer that could be pulled by a large truck. It had to have an air conditioner at all times as the equipment would get hot and burn out. So when it got unbearably hot, we would all find some reason to be in the trailer that day. "Gunny, I have to find some new music to play on the warm up show." Hey don't knock it; it worked! The fragging is an enigma to me. I keep wondering who was the target of the fragging. The butthole of a Sergeant Major? His job was to be a butthole. I tell myself that the kid that was responsible was just coo-coo and needed no reason to do it. Roo tried to tell the chaplain that latrine was not clean; to use another one. Now I am glad the guys had the priviledges of associating with the ladies but why did she give Zeke the keys to her office? I can see giving him the keys to her hootch but she said it was the office keys. So then when she got bent out of shape because he was in her office, then what gives, girl! Tour of Duty tackled the demon fear. Fear is the combat soldier's worst enemy. But it can also be his greatest friend if controlled and used. Safety is one of the by products of fear and it always pays to be safe. Yet the uncontrolable fear of our Roo was the enemy kind. It is demeaning and self destructive and can cause problems for a lifetime. Many of our brother and sister veterans today still suffer from the rigors of fear. Not all of the young grunts of 'Nam had a pretty lady nearby to help them deal with this dreaded disease. Then fear becomes an ally of hatred and the thing seems to gather momentum. I hope to see you all at this week's chat. We have some in North Carolina this weekend but those of us who could not go, will be there. Ernie...
This weeks episode is interesting in several ways. I have to give Taylor credit for initiative. Air Conditioning chips?? It was hot and humid in Vietnam and not many could tolerate that. Boys from Wisconsin could not seem to function in the heat and even though they were not used to air conditioning at home, they soon wanted it badly.
