So in reality, George, G.I's never referred to a lieutenant as LT (at least not to their face)?
Wonder why they used that term of address so freely on the show in that case?
: This happened a couple of months after the
: show began airing.
:
: The show was a hit and was fast becoming a
: main course in the cultural diet of the
: members
: of my regiment. One night, a young gunner
: was talking to his Lieutenant and made the
: mistake of saying "oh, LT". His
: little world came crashing down. First, the
: Lieutenant
: barked at him -- "What did you just
: call me? You will address me either as
: Lieutenant, or
: Sir, UNDERSTOOD!" It got worse. In
: the next office was the Regimental Sargeant
: Major,
: (otherwise known as God to the Junior
: Ranks). Once the Lieutenant was finished
: chewing
: out this poor gunner (who probably wished he
: was being used as a cleaning stave by now),
: he was turned over to the tender mercies of
: the RSM. He did pack drill for an hour
: (that's where you have to perform drill at
: light infantry pace -- 120 paces/movements
: per minute, as opposed to the normal 90
: paces/movements per minute, while wearing a
: 60 pound rucksack. It was the first and
: last time anyone in my regiment would refer
: to a Lieutenant as LT.
