Hi gang,
Once again the squeaky wheel gets the grease!
I along with our developer and financial consultant will be in a closed session with Norm Hickling of Los Angeles County on the 24th of this month.
At the meeting we will continue our discussion in regard to the hurdles of leasing or acquiring some of the vacant airport property and to clarify who actually owns and or controls the land and how that effects our relationship with
LAWA(City of Los Angeles), the City of Palmdale and the County of Los Angeles. Other topics will include the organized rally on the footsteps of the Los Angeles City Hall and once again if we can close down a county road for something temporary.
Until then we still need to write to our local government in order to let them know of our concerns and to show that the drag racing community is strong in its numbers both here locally and in the surrounding communities that use to frequent L.A.C.R.
In addition Brian Golden with the AV Press is putting together yet another article on the subject which may come out as early as tomorrow.
I want to make sure that I clarify something here; When we are referring to the Airport property (17,000 + acres) we are not necessarily talking about the Airport or airstrip located near plant 42 that had been recently closed for commuter service with United Airline. Even though that would be a good idea and a real quick turn around I really don’t think that the federal government would let us use it because of homeland security.
The 17,000 + acres that we are referring to is land that LAWA and the City of Palmdale earmarked many years ago in order to build an international airport. This land is still vacant after all these years and it seems evident that intention to build and international airport has failed. Some of the property in question is currently being leased to farmers but the lions share is just sitting there!
Bernie Longjohn had tried dealing with LAWA for approximately two years prior to the track closing to no avail; in fact Bernie sent me the response below the other day that said the following.
“Been there, done that 2 years before we were forced to close LACR...They are all talk. Bernie.”
I feel however that with the recent news and the dilemma of the “Use it or Lose it” implications that the City of Palmdale is faced with, just might be the break that we have all been waiting for.
I truly believe that the Drag Racing community could be very beneficial to the City of Palmdale and could become one of their best allies to date!
So keep those letters and comments coming, in fact some of you have had some very good comments that you have posted on both the LACR.net and the SaveLACR.org bulletin boards! Well gang, send those comments to the local government too!
Well there ya have it…
Until next time you all take care and keep the faith!
