First of all “Everyone” needs to stop and take a breath, the one thing we all want is a “New Drag Strip to Replace LACR”, I personally don’t care who makes it happen, if it’s me and Jeff (Moldy) or anyone else that’s fine but we need a place too help keep kids stay off the streets and a place for us devoted Drag Racers to race.
As for Banning (aka Drag City), I wasn’t there and I can’t confirm or deny anything about the circumstances as to why it didn’t happen.
FACT: I can tell you that I have heard the rumors about the Marocco’s and their business dealings concerning Banning just like everyone else, I can also tell you that rumors in the Drag Racing business run rampant. Case in point, for several years there was (and still is) a moron who calls himself “Agent 1320”, he would post on the “Drag City” message board how he “Personally Talked To Bernie Longjohn” and “Bernie told him that LACR was closing at the end of the year”, he would post this along with other misinformation about LACR on a regular basis, this was several years before the unfortunate close of LACR in 2007. As the Director of Marketing for LACR and the Webmaster, I would let Bernie know about this garbage when ever it was brought too my attention, Bernie’s response was who is this guy, my response was, you know it doesn’t matter, if the guy doesn’t have the balls to give his name, who cares, my point is, “Don’t take everything you read on the in internet as fact”!
FACT: Original investors in the Banning Drag Strip have filed suit against the American Racing LLC (Andy Marocco) and his group but keep in mind that we are “All Innocent Until Proven Guilty” and these folks may just be angry that things didn’t go their way, we will have to see how it plays out in court.
FCAT: I’ve known Bob “Stormy” Byrd for years (16 years at LACR) and if he said he was there through all the Drag City controversy than “Believe It”, Stormy has done more for Drag Racing through his support and he’s position as a journalist than most of the people I know, his honesty and professionalism are bar none and I consider him a friend. Was he and others duped by the Marocco’s, only time will tell, but I can tell you with complete certainty that his belief in what he says is real, and you can take that to the bank.
FACT: We “All” need to get past all the “Could Have Been”, “Might Have Been” and “Who Did What” and focus on our strengths on getting a “New Drag Strip”, because there is strength in numbers and that’s what’s going to make it happen. I’ve been lacking on my end lately because like the rest of you I have to make a living and I don’t have to tell you that it's getting harder than ever to do that. We are still working on getting a new track built, but unfortunately we can’t devote full time to it. But I want all of you to know that it is still uppermost in our lives and it will happen, and the reason it will happen is because of people like myself and Moldy and Stormy and the other racers on this board and the other boards around L. A. So let’s stay focused.
