Yeah Rodger, they really were the “Good Old Days”, back then there were Drag Strips all over the country, especially her in Southern California where it all started. Back in those days there was Lions, OCIR, Santa Anna, San Fernando, LACR, Irwindale (the real I Irwindale ¼ mile), Riverside and all the rest. There is Drag Racing in those communities today, unfortunately it’s on the on the streets.
You know it really is more than just Drag Racing and Stormy brought it up in his earlier post, Drag Racing is just the catalyst, it’s what brings everyone together, what it’s really all about is “community”, think about it. When you go to the strip, you see friends that maybe you haven’t seen for a while, you catch up on how everyone is doing and of course as we all know there is as much “Bench Racing” going on as there is competition between the cars. It’s a social event, it’s a way to enjoy a sport that we all love and hang out with other like minds.
What I really don’t understand is the local cities and there thinking, if they stopped to add it up, it cost the city more in services to deal with illegal street racing then it would to support a local track. Buy the time you figure in the cost for local law enforcement to answer the calls, time to chase the racer down, write a report or make an arrest and transport, and if there is an accident do to the incident at hand, you now have the cost for fire and rescue crews and let’s not forget injury or loss of life to all involved.
It’s been this way since I was a kid, they would close another Drag Strip and complain about the kids racing on the streets, I just don’t get it, I guess they don’t either.
