Check out my story I did on Palmdale on savelacr.com,"A Diamond in the rough" I did in Full Throttle News a while back.I had Drag News on it and gave a little history on Palmdale.
Tim had some really neat 8 by 10's of the ground breaking sent to him by a guy who was there and passed away but wanted the photo's kept with the track as part of it's history.Those photo's are on the same savelacr site that Moldy Marvin put up to try and save the track.The more I think about LACR the more I miss it.I have a nice shot of the track as my screen background so I'm reminded every day of the place,cant belive it's gone!. As I look back as I started going there in the late 70's, it was a very special place.A lot of people called it a dust bowl but before the big pile of sand was at the top end it was a good track.More than any other track it was a place where friends met,it was FAMILY! no other track I've raced at had that atmosphere.LACR was OUR track.It was a place we all knew we could count on for being there to race even after Lion's,Irwindale the "County" and TI had closed.
NHRA didnt even have the courtesy to send an official out to rally the troops and this was an NHRA member track.But then NHRA has let dozens of tracks slide by the wayside.Bernie saw the place was not going to be saved by city officials a long time back. Mike Antonavich(?spelling?) was trying to work with Granit Const. but Palmdale government dropped the ball.Bernie told me all along Granit Const. was NOT the bad guy in the deal.The more I think about it the more I get pissed.We get shit on by city officials and NHRA turns a blind eye all the while saying"we need a place to get kids off the street" and "We at NHRA are now going to focus on the "Sportsman" TOO LITTLE TO LATE GLENDORA!!!!!!!!!I guess its easy to focus on Sportsman now that we only have Bakerfield,Fontana.... well last time I checked I cant run my Blown Modified Roadster there.Oh I almost forgot Barona..1/8 mile in San Diego county, its a neat place but it's small.
Damn I miss LACR and Bernie,Tim,John,Bill Baily,Gary etc. Enjoy the story,if you like it let me know I'll send you a copy of the Full Throttle News. Cell # 818 461 4007
