I remember the beginning very well. After they had the track made, the first time they let anyone in was free. They let us run heads up (grudge races)so they could get the track preped by getting some rubber laid down. I was a senior back then at PHS. I worked at the Hancock Gas Station on Palmdale Blvd & 10th St. East.
I had a 52 Ford Wagon with a 57 T-Bird Special (312)
I had a lot of friends who ran out there in the early years. One you might of known was Dennis Sather (a Mopar man) Tall slim guy.

: Hey Rodger:
:
: It broke ground in 1963 and opened to the
: public in 1964. Back then it was
: "Palmdale International Raceway",
: we would race till one or two in the morning
: sleep at the track and get up the next
: morning and do it again.
:
: I was 16 years old back then and San
: Fernando Drags was our home track, it was a
: long trip from the San Fernando Valley to
: Palmdale, the only way there was Sierra
: Highway one lane in each direction.
:
: Thanks for your post and take care.
:
: Below is a picture of the NHRA reps checking
: out the track 1963 before it opened.
