Shes home today, lad feels sad.
Doctor, he called, whispered low:
When the first autumn leaves fall, then she must go.
Ill keep her here. murmurs he.
Big man in blue sternly cries:
What are you doing there? Lad replies:CHORUS
Sad mother grieves, day by day,
Im tying the leaves so they wont come down,
So the wind wont blow them away,
For the best little girl in the whole wide world,
Is lying so ill today.
Im fixing them fast so theyll stay.
Im tying the leaves so they wont come down,
So Nellie wont go away.
Watching the leaves, hears boy say:
You mustnt cry, for, you see,
Ive tied all the leaves fast up on the tree.
Mother tells boy: Nell will stay.
Lad at girls side, cries with glee:
Thats what I said one day in the tree.CHORUS
