Hi Marco, I wonder if your maternal grandmother was sent to America prior to her teaching job in the Philippines. There were a lot of native teachers who were sent to USA for training and later came back to take over the Thomasites positions as teachers. Another possibility is that your grandma must be already fluent in English and was already teaching before the Tomasites came. When the American came all the native teachers were allowed to teach in public schools and your grandma must had already some English courses which were actually offered in some elite schools during the Spanish regime. So the Thomasites perhaps didn't really train her but simply placed her in that position and she turned out to be the first English teacher in her area. Let me hear your view in this regards coz I'm curious and interested.
