That takes longer after mishandling than it does when they're started. You can whip his ass and put him in the box but that's probably what your buddy did after having blown him up. Be patient and score lots of cattle before you rope off of him again. Keeping him relaxed is the key. If he's excited or afraid, he can't learn at all. Until he's completely calm, you'll just have to spend a lot of time hanging out in the box with cattle in the chute and a horse in the other box if he's a team roper.

Whoever you loaned him to mishandled him pretty badly. When dealing with horses, ignorance causes as much trouble as abuse. You're basically going to have to start all over gettin him comfortable with the box.
