Patrick Troughton played the evil Nasca high priest and Diane Keen Brian Deacon and Richard Willis played the youngsters. It was written by John Kane. Hope this might be of use

I've no video or images of the series but the TV Times has full listings and I remember watching it on ITV. It concerned an Aztec emporer who wished to put an end to all the sacrificing that waa going on. However the local High priest has other ideas and its thwe usual battle of science against religion. It revolved around three children (bit like into the labyrinth). The epsiodes were very heavy on dialogue. I seem to remember that this put me off it a bit as just as you would get to a good head chopping, the camera would swiftly move elsewhere in the city.
You're right about the bloody creepy as I doubt it would have been allowed for kids of a later decade. Nowadays it would probably have been banned not because of the sacrificing and stuff but because of the non PC elements.
