Like Willo the Wisp, I initially thought of "Don't Look Now" - a horror film based on a story by Daphne du Maurier. Another possibility is "The Sylvia Game," which I remember seeing on "Jackanory" (probably in the 1980s). In "The Sylvia Game," the main girl character resembles a girl called Sylvia who drowned. There is a portrait of Sylvia on the wall.
