Hi Darren,
This sounds like a series called "King of the Castle" (The theme tune was that very nursery rhyme).
It starred the late great Fullton McKay Porridge & Fraggle Rock)& a very funny Welsh comedy/character actor Talfyn Thomas (Dad's Army)
I don't think it's ever been released on any format (so far) And it was aired on ITV, the first series on a Saturday afternoon following 'World of Sport' & the second series on a Sunday Tea time.
Like yourself apart from it being very weird & curing my constipation 
I don't remember a great deal about the series,much like other scary series from the 70s such as 'Sky' &'Children of the stones).
