Posted by Taxx on 2/15/2007, 23:41:40, in reply to "FOIA Question" - Basically, The privacy act makes employers safeguard "Privacy Data"- medical status, social security numbers, personal addresses, and phone numbers, among other things. - The Freedom of Information Act act allows you to access certain information that concerns YOU, noone else. In other words, if a command investigation was done investigating you for something, you could request a copy of the investigation under the FOIA. The request would go to the base legal office where a lawyer would review your request, and make a determination as to what information you are or are not entitled to under the FOIA, and then provide the information you are entitled to. It does NOT mean that you have access to my medical records. It basically exists so that you can have access to YOUR OWN personal information. A lawyer could probably explain this a little better, and maybe I'm not 100% correct on all of this, but this is what I have picked up in dealing with my Marines and some of their personal issues. Now here is a question for you- why does a rochester student visit a USMC website to ask about the privacy act and FOIA?

The Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act are two completely different documents.
