Renee,
First, I've gone off on here before about the Marines that quit. I don't understand the reasoning behind it. You know what you are signing up for, so don't get upset if it's not different. They are quiters, pure and simple, and to be honest with you, I'd rather they not be in my Corps anyway.
You don't try out for the Marines. If you get excepted for enlistment or commision, you are bound to do your best. But it's not like some school play where you can just throw your hands up and say "enough". It just doesn't work that way. It's tough to claim the title, and like the saying says, it wouldn't be the Marines if anyone could be a Marine.
As for your Mom, it's tough, especially in the post-9/11 years. My wife has a hard enough time, and I can't fathom what a Mom would be thinking. All you can do is explain your thoughts and goals, and hopefully she respects that.
Now for the recruiter, remember that they are salesman. He could be saying that just to try to get you to enlist now. If you don't mind posting, how old are you? Enlistment goes into the 30's these days, so that shouldn't be a problem. Just remember that this will be a 8 year contract, especially with all of the IRR Marines being called up. If you plan on entering the service around a specific date, you can sign papers up to a year in advance. But that doesn't mean you have to wait til then talk to someone. Go and ask every question you can think of and make sure you have a good understanding of what you are signing for.
Hope this helps. Please post again and let us know how this works out for you.
