Posted by Sgt. Phrogman Commissioned officers lead and command groups of Marines, Warrant Officers do not lead groups of Marines. Commissioned Officers are appointed by the President, Warrant Officers are not. There are two groups of WOs, each with their own school. Technical Warrant Officers (and your recruiter may be one) have technical skills such as those I mentioned previously. Non- technical WOs are the most special Marines in the Corps. They are the legendary “Gunners.” Gunners are Warrant Officers who are specialists in all aspects of infantry weapons and who are the source of expertise in the employment of weapons organic to infantry units. In addition, they are responsible for the development, coordination and monitoring of unit training programs for tactical weapons employment. In short they are the epitome of Marine lethal excellence. Gunners must be Gunnys or better with at least 16 years of service before they can be nominated to be a Gunner. All other WOs only require a Sgt with 8 years of service. Gunners are authorized to wear the bursting bomb insignia as an alternative to their regular WO insignia. Never make the mistake of addressing any Warrant Officer as a “Gunner” unless you are positive that you are addressing a Gunner. Good luck in EARNING the Title. Phrogman out.

Warrant Officers are somewhere in between enlisted and commissioned officers. WOs are very proficient in a particular MOS. This can be disbursement, family readiness, career recruiting, band leaders and other areas. Senior enlisted Marines are nominated to become WOs.
