This year, I was struggling to collect accurate data on my students that need help with social language and pragmatic goals. Technology was my answer. I have a digital video camera at my school. I ordered a wireless microphone for my video camera. Now, I put the microphone on my students at lunch, recess, snack time, etc. and stand against the wall and video tape them. The sound comes right back to the camera and I don't have to be invasive and alter outcomes with my presence. I do usually throw out the first few minutes of tape though as students are very aware of the microphone before they become engaged with other students. I hope this can work for anyone else in a similar data collection situation. It also is a great time saver for AAC scripting in classrooms. Just mic the teacher and go. You can review the script at your leisure.
