I find that I am able to pull a lot of language from my students by using interactive story books. Two series that are particularly language rich are Living Books published by Broderbund and Magic Tales published by Davidson. The best way to get my students to want to respond is by me controlling the mouse! For my 3-5 year olds I ask them what should I click on? With my 5-8 year olds I would ask them to tell me two things about the item they want me to click on. I can vary the difficulty by not allowing them to use a color word, use directional words (right, left, top, bottom of screen). The other students try to guess the item. When I click we talk about the action and they get an opportunity to request that it be repeated. I get undivided attention and a lot of words! This has been so effective and enjoyable that I now have computer day once a week with each group.
