Hello Sabrina,
I guess we are at least cousins? I lived at 2222 No. Fairoaks with my gandfather, Clark Harper and "Buffy" Sarah Harper. Winona Pearl, My great grandmother lived there in the room north of the living room. I was around 8 or 10. Also living there then was my uncle Preston and his wife, Mary. My sisters were there as well. My mother sylvia was a very sick women (alcoholism) and our butt head father left yet again, So my brother and I basically ignored the "old woman" that lived in the room. She did not come out much. We teased her, as young boys do. I remember looking through some of her letters and a small :notebook" that told a story of her mother living in Telequah OK the CHerokee female seminary. By the age of 12 I was placed in a Home for boys along with Larry (my brother deceased 1999), Lawrence Lenoir Parsons. My great great granny, Winona Pearl died on my 12th birthday Dec, 14 1964. I was sad. She once was looking out her bedroom window watching the cars go past. She thought that it was ONE car and that what a nice man he was to drive back and forth for her entertainment. She would also hide food in her room, We would bring her her meals, to the room and later gather the dishes. We had to search her drawers so we would not get rats. She had long hair that she kept in three buns, ratted up, one on top and one on each side. She had two long long braids in the back. She looked to me as an indian squaw. I have a picture of her somewhere in my house that I will post here when I (i mean my wife, Mary) finds it. Because we were a split up and crazy kind of family there are a lot of areas I am not clear on and my dear daughter Cari is curious and is helping me piece it together. I have more memories and other relatives, Aunt Pat cummings? Heard of her? She is a wealth of information and I am going to try to open communication with her. She is living in Beaumont CA with Don, her husband. She has written a couple of books in which she tellls of our family and history, but indirectly.
I am very interested in legitimizing my heritage, being on the roll call of proud Cherokee Indians. Even though I never really knew, until now, I have always "felt" that I had a special connection, spiritually with the earth and my surroundings. I am Cherokee. My mothers mother is Cherokee. My great great great grandfather was Chief William Hicks. We are cousins. Good health and long life to you and yours. I shall write again and include any pictures I find. Take care, Steve
