My Great Grandfather, William T. Lightfoot, was born in Wake county, N.C. 1830, died in Baldwin County Sanitarium (Milledgeville, Ga.) Jan 1, 1920. He worked most of his life as a merchant; married twice, first, to Caroline Collins in Tattnall county, then to my great grandmother Mamie Johns in Liberty Militia District, Georgia.
During all my childhood years, my father, William Alford Lightfoot, and his side of the family told me we had Cherokee Indian blood, and, in fact, that my Great Grandfather was a full blooded Cherokee Indian chief. I have never found any evidence of this being fact. The name "Lightfoot" has its roots in England. The name means "messenger."
I am in the process of connecting my Great Grandfather William T. Lightfoot, to two other William Lightfoots, his father and grandfather, born in Northampton county, North Carolina, born in 1802 and around 1750. I believe that this will also lead to a William Lightfoot that lived in the area of Williamsburg, Va. in the 1600's.
It is possible that the William Lightfoot that was your great great grandfather was the son of my great grandfather from his first marriage to Caroline Collins. If not, then you may be right about your Native American heritage; although I believe it would be due to a great great grandmother that was Native American that was married to a Lightfoot; but all my information shows that Lightfoot is not a Native American name. The name dates back to 13th century England and Ireland.
Regards,
Wm. A. Lightfoot.
