unalihelitseti (greetings) Talking Crow,
My Grandmother was a King so maybe we are related. There are many Kings on the Dawes Roll. This is the governments last official roll call for Cherokees. In particular there are 2 James Kings listed (my Greatgrandfather was James King). There are literally pages of Kings. King is a very common Cherokee surname! Go to the Cherokee Nation Website and register at the site. This will get you on the mailing list and access to parts of the site that may be useful. It is free to do so. You don't have to prove anything to register. You can take Cherokee lessons online of you wish. My nephew runs the class and it is very good. The site has much information on tracing your roots. There are also a lot of hot-links to websites that you can use. The Dawes Roll is one of these links. Find out where your Grandmother was born and obtain a birth certificate. This may have the proof you need if it says she is Native American. if not there are many other ways such as death certificates, birth certificates, marriage licenses. etc. Good luck, Wado!
