SparQ: parallel to USB?

Has anyone any experience of using a Sparq 1.0 GB using a parallel port to USB converter? I understand these connectors work fine for most legacy printers but have read that they could struggle with data storage devices. O/S would be either Win XP or Vista Ultimate.
