Posted by charley priddy Hi Folks, Over the past several weeks Ive received calls and emails from CBHS alumni regarding a letter that they have received from the Harris Publishing Company soliciting their vita information (current mailing address, phone number, etc.) to be included in a yet to be published alumni directory of Cocoa Beach High School. The accompanying letter states that this project has Ms. Vanns endorsement yet is written in such a manor that it is misleading as to its purpose. (Ms. Vann is the current principal of CBHS.) Several people have contacted Ms. Vann and she has let us know that this is a project of the Brevard Schools Foundation. She also has spoken with Harris Publishing Company about the contents and tone of the letter and has been assured that they will be updating it so it doesnt appear to be a scam. The Harris Publishing Company is working with the Brevard Schools Foundation in the school District Office of Brevard Public Schools. Ive also learned that Harris Publishing Company has previously produced directories for nine other high schools in Brevard County in association with the Brevard Schools Foundation. This company produces alumni directories of many colleges, universities, and junior/community colleges throughout the United States. As a founding and current member of the Cocoa Beach Alumni Association (CBAA) and former member of the CBAA Board of Directors at no time during my tenure as the Acting President, President or as a member of the Board of Directors has the CBAA shared the membership database with any company or individual. As the point of contact for the Cocoa Beach High School Class of 1967 Ive worked at maintaining a database of the current addresses of those Ive located for our class reunions since 1986. I dont share the personal vita information in that database with anyone either. Should anyone wish to contact someone in my Class I act as an intermediary between the parties. I let someone know that someone else is trying to contact them and it is then it is up to them if they want to touch base with the party that contacted me. Personally I dont endorse this effort as the money spent to purchase the directory could really help fulfilling the unfunded needs at the Beach schools: CBHS, Roosevelt Elementary, Cape View Elementary, and Freedom 7 Elementary School for International Studies. I believe that this web site, the Cocoa Beach Alumni Connection, through the devoted diligence and talents of Linda Bates MacCleave (CBHS 1965), the web master, serves the same purpose as the alumni directory that the Harris Publishing Company is soliciting CBHS alumni at this time. Over the past three years I have been involved myself in identifying those needs and trying to find a way to fund some of them. Besides the efforts of the Cocoa Beach Alumni Association Education Foundation other ways you can make a difference visit CBHS Boosters at http://www.cbhsboosters.com or the Brevard Schools Foundation at http://bsf.brevard.k12.fl.us/Programs.html on the World Wide Web. Sincerely, Link: http://www.cbhsbooster.com

I understand that when the directory is published it will be sold to anyone that wants the information contained within.
