Posted by Steve Daniel Although patterning in the stone makes the carved text appear to read 1848, careful examination (including running your finger over the carving) shows that the date is actually 1843. His report on the 1843/44 expedition, on which the incription must have been based, refers to reorganizing the party at Ft. St. Vrain on July 23 1843. Fremont visited Fort St. Vrain in July of 1842 and twice in July of 1843, but never afterwards. His subsequent routes all took a more southerly course passing through Bents Fort, but never again through Fort St. Vrain see: Fremont Report - House Document 166, 28th Congresss, 2nd session. February 25, 1845. Serial Vol. 467.

on one of the pages of your site there is a transcription of the text of the Fort St. Vrain marker that erroneously refers to Fremont reorganizing his historic expedition at the fort on July 23, 1848.
