Whoa.... I am almost tempted to accuse you of being the individual behind Jed McKenna.
I'm flattered to say the least, but honestly, though I respect his personal style for its ability to shake people from their foundations, I am not he. There should be more like him though, because all people seem to want is to feel comfortable by hearing comfortable things and be told that realization is culmination of comfort. Jed laughs it all off, and frankly, whether there was realization there is unimportant. His Moby Dick breakthrough tells me that at the very least he is a very advanced human being, clearly well beyond the development of the vast majority of humanity. For this reason alone, people need to listen to him.
Jed once said "it's like being skinned alive.. eviscerated." Do we doubt him?
The caterpillar/butterfly schtick is the singlemost (over)used analog in the history of everything written about enlightenment; it isn't just a Jed thing. The metamorphic process of a growing larvae is the perfect expression of a mind evolving through the strata of consciousness until it escapes from it altogether.
As for the link, I only provided it for reference's sake; don't read too much into certain keywords you find in the contents. I only mentioned it to illustrate that identifying enlightenment is not the cut and dry process some make it out to be. There are some fairly powerful statements to the tune in the article by Shankara as well as others.
