In the presence of a Divine Master, all is revelead about oneself.
From my understanding, Harvey was nearly destroyed as you put it, only because his limited mind could not understand the full workings of a Divine Being and his ego couldn't take it.
This is what happens when you associate with Divine Beings...your ego gets destroyed. And I believe that is exactly what Harvey experienced, but resisted it and instead of embracing Mother as a true teacher, he turned against Her.
