Yes, gironomo, I think your two words hit it on the head.
Our own freedom from the ego is not found by looking again outside ourself to someone else that we may elevate above us.
To find oneness, we don't need to look for a fragment. Many may say that the guru is no fragment, and if this is the case, then we don't need to seek him in a particular body, form, or personality.
Within this search, we often repeat the same errors we were trying to abandon.
We all have egos. Watch out for those who say 'they' don't. The point is not finding one special prophet who has none at all, for if that were the way, go ahead and consult a stone. If you find out that your guru has an ego, would that make the truth not true?
He or she may still speak insightful words, and if they can help you to experience freedom from the self-construct, then that is wonderful.
On a more practical level, from my own biased experience, I have found books to be more egoless than meeting the teachers face to face, and the words just as wise. (:
