What happens at the moment of enlightenment?

I have heard and read many stories about situations that have caused people to become enlightened by a variety of methods. It seems that you need to be 'shocked' into letting go of the ego. What happens though the minutes, hours, days, etc. after this awakening? What is the effect of enlightenment?
