Hi,
I am late posting this but I would like to pay my respects to Hugh and my sincerest condolences to all his family who are now mourning his loss. I have the same memory as Greg regarding Radio Carousel and I remember thinking how sophisticated and highly technical it all looked to me back then looking in through the glass in the Shopping Centre in the early 80's... One record they used play a lot was 'Lying in the arms of Mary' from Smokie. Carousel was so much to so many people and to this day it's spirit lives on in those who heard it and loved Hugh's shows and all the other great shows on 1386 AM.
Of course Navan was just one small part of a far greater radio empire and when we think back there were some other great stations like it around the country like Radio West in Mullingar and Treble TR - I think it is a pity that those stations never got a licence as they were really part of culture and community back then. There was a certain natural traditional feeling of warmth that all those rural or country style stations had that the legal stations tried to emulate in some way but never achieved that little x factor that people like Hugh created with stations like Carousel. Whether you liked the sound of it or not - it was there as a service to the people and perhaps not as slick as Nova or the Dublin Superpirates but nonetheless a really welcome addition to the radio landscape of the 1980s.
Rest in Peace Hugh.
May you be 'mooovin awwwn' to a better place.
Enda.
