Great post Anselm!
NOVA was ALWAYS ahead of the pack "settin' the pace" with music.
There sure were lots of different "Nova edits" of songs.
The 12inch version of "I can hear your heartbeat" by Chris Rea.
A dance mix of "Self Control" Laura Branigan.
Chris wanted it to be "boss jock radio" and that meant that the slow intros and less interesting parts of the songs had to be edited out. I remember "Everybody wants to run the world" Tears For Fears being played on Nova - haven't heard it in years.
It was not only the special edits of songs just the playlist itself was SOOO much better than anything else on the dial.
I remember they often played obscure things like Nana Miskouri's "Only Love" and Paul Mc Cartney's "Frog Chorus" but only in keeping with the songs being topical or the artist being in the news or popular at the time. They had a much wider variety based playlsit than stations nowadays that remind us of "more music variety" after every song today.
Nova's playlist had a great way of "talking to you through the music" and summing up the mood of the time / week / day (or what may have been happening behind the scenes at Nova).
When I hear songs like "The Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley or "Electric Avenue" I always go back to the Nova days.. or Grace Jones "Slave To The Rhythm" or "The Word Girl" Scritti Politti..
Nova - The Sound Of Europe.
