I had the misfortune to be in hospital this week for a few days and had the even bigger misfortune to have had to listen 24 hours a day to the range of radio stations available here. As I usually listen to TodayFM and BBC R2 most days, I was fairly disappointed with what I heard on the radio. Firstly due to the meds I was awake almost all the time for three days and (I never realised this before!) found that there isn't one station in Dublin providing Live 24 hour programming - or am I wrong? Most are providing 18-20ish hours and then 4-6 hours of repeats. Are budgets really that tight these days that none of them can afford to employ an overnighter or is it just lack of interest? There must be several hundred thousand potential listeners (nationwide and surely mtens of thousands in Dublin?)overnight - nurses(and patients), night workers, drivers etc. Some of the best radio talent I have heard have been overnighters - Alex Lester(BBC R2) Gerry Wilson (ex 2fm), Kevin Greening(when he was on BBC R1 years ago).
Do I sound petty or does anyone else agree?
Is there any station in Ireland providing a true 24 hour service?
Is there a market for a syndicated overnighter?
Is computerised playout systems the cause of all this?
Any end of rant!! Need some sleep!
Over and out!
