That is very true "Another Demo" ...
In 1998/99 as soon as I had found out that it was Tom Hardy that was back in Dublin at Today FM I called him up in his office "Hello, Tom Hardy speaking.." (as if he was going to say 103.7 Kiss FM Monaghan Town Lock us in and rip your knob off!) Now the last time I had met the man was in 1991 in 8 Upper Mount St. at "Classic Hits 98FM" when he was on lunchtimes - I was just 15 taking the guided tour of the radio station - basically learning how a radio station works..
Anyway, back to my story - On the phone to Tom I said "are there any gigs going and would it be worth sending you in a demo? Just so you can hear what I sound like" - and Tom's response was classic calm and collected as always: " Nothing at the moment Enda but do send in your aircheck it's always nice to have something in the drawer"
So.. then much time passed on and on..through 1999 and into 2000 (by this stage I was already on Atlantic 252 and pretty much thinking with a UK hat on yet still based in Meath at The Longwave Giant and would kind of listen to Irish radio just as a pastime rather than think of any serious work on there..) and into part of 2001 when I got a call out of the blue.. It was Tom Hardy - "we would like you to come in for a chat"
- And true to his word I was in that drawer for over 2 years but I "got the gig" and he was a pleasure to work with I must say. He is a good coach and mentor who takes interest in people that are sincere. He hasn't time for all the B.S. that goes on ... hence why it was as handy for him to have a nice quiet side office away from the madding crowd and the RTE half of the building in there..
If you ever heard how good Kiss Monaghan sounded in 1988 - THAT is how Today FM would sound if certain people would leave him alone to get on with his job!
So, thanks to one man in there fighting my corner, yesterday was the 7th anniversary of the first ever Planet Hits Show on 100-102 Today FM Ireland with myself Enda Caldwell (Sat. 26th May 2001)
The following Wednesday in Atlantic 252 my aircheck meeting had an added part at the end where John O'Hara had a listen to my Today FM aircheck... working with 2 Nova jocks on 2 National stations whose very existence was pioneered by Chris Cary was a great time... and a story for another day..
And.. the "other national Pd" you speak of is a gentleman too.. and that is another story for another day.. perhaps near a huge jukebox some Sunday afternoon?
