"I agree Warren. But re-branding is easy... Recreating the original without Chris Cary's input.... Impossible." - That is 100% correct Shane.Chris original innovation behind The Great Irish Radio Experiment could never be achieved again on the levels and from all angles in the way he changed the face of commercial radio in Ireland.
"It's the same as saying bring back Sunshine - without Robbie, Impossible. Look, Nova, had it got it's licence would have moved with the times." - I know Robbie would agree with you on this matter. Nove would have of course moved with the times and indeed changed direction completely if the original formula had ran it's course - if you listened to all incarnations of the Nova brand then you would know that Chris could try out classical music and talk on 99.9fm whilst banging out red-hot CHR on 103.1 whilst doing soft hits somewhere elsewhere on the band. He educated us to the word "format" and also Quality in radio not just half baked stuff like we had been fed by RTE until Nova and Sunshine came along.
"The music policy would have changed with the times. " - YES! Agreed! just listen to www.nova100.com.au and hear how the name sits amongst the new stars of today!? ..also how the delivery and imaging is very much of our times compared to Nova's imaging which is more 80's USA AC and CHR style.
"However there is no station in Ireland that has the 'slickness' (I know it's the wrong word but you know what I mean) that Nova AND Sunshine had."
I think that Century had a good sound in fairness in it's time.. 104 over the years have always maintained a more metro-ranging sound that Chris had pioneered on Nova and NRG.Atlantic 252 had all the slickness of Nova too in all it's various format guises - especially considering most of the management at one point or another were at Nova!!!
I think though that there is that certain overall "je ne sais quoi" or magic feeling that is intangible and inexplicable missing rather from all the post IRTC '89 stations.
"Surprising, considering the number of people (and program controllers) who are ex-Nova/Sunshine staff and they fail to use the formula. Comments anyone?? Am I wrong? Would like to hear from Pro's like Enda Caldwell, Declan Meehan, John Clarke, Willie O'Reilly etc..."
I can only speak for myself and say what Chris originally said: "it's Dickie Bow radio.. like a priest doing a disco"
That approach still stands.
I am biting my lip here at the end and what I would have to say would offend far too many people so I will just leave it at that.
Nova, Energy and Sunshine / SuperQ were all a great listen, as was Kiss Monaghan and some of the other great stations like South Coast in Cork, ABC , WLR and Frankie's Riverside 101.
The rest as they say is all "say, say, say" like the song goes... on Radio Nova.
