hi Lewie, I'm one of the people involved with the Nova tribute. I never met Chris personally, and would've felt slightly uncomfortable attending his funeral alongside his close friends and family.
I grew up in Dublin in the 80s with an obsession about radio. The cliche of the schoolkid listening to the radio under the blankets late at night was true for me.
This might come as a shock to some people, but Dublin in the 1980s wasn't the happiest of places. It could be a very grim, grey city with huge unemployment rates and a stagnant economy. The likes of Radio Nova and Sunshine were more than just radio station to a lot of us. They were aspirational, entertaining and played some decent music too.
You might be failing in school; you might be in trouble at home; you might not know what the hell you were going to do with your life, but at least you could switch on the radio and forget about things for just a couple of minutes. Dublin seemed like a brighter place when the superpirates were around.
The tribute we're doing this weekend can't possibly come close to the real thing. Its not intended to. Nothing could.
