First of all it’s a shame the big guy left us the way he did but I do find it fitting that it was a leap year.
I remember as a kid the $10k giveaway and at the time working in a restaurant in Rathmines. It was during the day and everybody was crowded around the radio waiting for the 50th caller. (Or was it 100th). The whole of Dublin was in standstill mode and if I remember correctly the phone service crashed and you could not even get in touch with 999. One of the songs was George Michael and the other Prince?????
Fast forward to Energy and being a bit older but still a kid I would cycle from Ranelagh to 144 Upper Lesson Street on a Saturday and knock on the door to see of I could get in. I never did but one day whilst Rick Dees was on a guy opened the third floor window and threw down an Energy 103 badge and wooden pen. I still have them somewhere and still wonder who that guy was!!!
Energy disappeared without a trace and for a short while us Dubliners where in heaven again as we could get a relay of The Nova Night Network. ‘From 26,000 miles in the sky”
We only received it for about 5 months and I always remember Greg Edwards’s finishing a show and Chris starting his. Greg hung around for most of the night giving Chris a hard time and just generally having fun on air. It was pure brilliance!! (How did he get so many good jocks to sign up to a satellite station in the first place). I rang him one night and I couldn’t believe that he had the time to talk to me. Every time he asked me to hang on for a sec it was to do a link or cue a cart, never to cut me off.
Chris you gave us so much and encouraged me to get into radio. The respect I had for you most was that you gave so many people in Dublin something amazing when it was a pretty dull and depressing place to be.
R.I.P
Hopefully ‘From 26,000 miles in the sky”!!!!!!!!
