Sybil, some time ago you posted this question on the board, IS THE INTERNET A GOOD OR BAD THING?.
I cannot recall what the general answer was but in respect of this message board over the past month it has to be a resounding Yes many times over. I met Chris just 3 times over 30 odd years.
First in Jan 1973 in Scheveningen when he was the driving force in getting the Mi Amigo out to sea and running Caroline. I spent a weekend in the company of some amazing radio personalities!
Next time was in the mid 80`s when I drove up to Nova Park and Chris was there and was good enough to give me a tour around the station complex including the club. Tony Allen was on the air with the Exidy 738am tests. After Chris played my demo cassete he said `Try to stay local if you can as if these tests work out ok we will need some English jocks fast.` A couple of days later the proposed Exidy 738 service was cancelled due to technical reasons. (Breakthrough). The Final time was in November at last years Radio day in Holland when we were chatting for 10-15 mins about English radio in Spain of which he was into as I am. He asked me to keep in touch this summer and we shook hands as he went on the stage for the final discussion.
I like so many were shocked to hear of his second stroke whilst in Tenerife and checked the message board daily for your reports on his condition. A few of your postings certainly brought a lump to my throat as the weeks went by. It has been said before but I would like to echo the admiration that people have for you in that you have allowed the public as well as friends/family to share an extremely difficult time in yours and Chris life.
We have had your frank and honest thoughts, feelings, emotions, hopes and much more in the updates since you arrived in Tenerife. Even though you have had many members of the `family` there throughout the weeks it comes over to me that you were the solid Rock that kept it together during this upsetting period,(and in a foreign country too).
When I saw the black screen on the website on Friday, I was gutted as I hoped and prayed that Chris would pull through this for a 2nd time.
When I read your 1946-2008 update I had tears in my eyes when I got to the end of the message, 1. Because of the way he had suddenly just died and 2.Due to the way you had found out at the Hospital. By now you will be back in the UK and will at least have family and friends around you at this sad time.
To most people in the Nova period they will remember a young Sybil Fennell who used to read the news and go out onto the street with cash but
what we have observed on this message board in February is the words and actions of a very Loving, Caring, Brave and Gutsy lady who has been there for Chris through the good and bad right to the end! He was a very fortunate man to have had such a loyal partner/wife/soulmate for 25 years.
At this time Sybil with yet another difficult week ahead of you, I would like to offer my condolences to you and the family. Without you and this message board most of the wider public would not have known about his stroke and untimely death. I dont think we are likely to see anything like this on such a personal level ever again. Thank you for being You. Regards, John Dwyer... Ibiza.
