The Scores
Kieron Maguire (viola, flamenco guitar, live effects) and Robert Parkinson (electric bass, dulcimer) create live cinema events in which scores and sound effects are semi-improvised, following the Dadaist credo to give "chance a chance". A variety of styles inform the scores - from woozy European folk and West African to experimental beats and electronica. They are joined by special guest, violinist Jack Maguire (Stromenti String Quartet, BSO).
The Films
Spanning eight decades, this international selection features classics of avant-garde filmmaking as well as lesser-known gems: lyrical animation from Russian master Andrei Khrjanovsky, nightmarish worlds courtesy of Brothers Quay and satirical claymation from Czech Jan Svankmajer. Geoffrey Jones demonstrates that films commissioned by British Rail can be as innovative as any Dadaist classic in his relentless and powerful “rhythmic films”. From the last decade Australian Daniel Askill experiments with CGI to create a surreal and beautiful triptych and Nicolas Provost provides an unusual take on Kurosawa.
“Haunting…Kieron Maguire’s music catapults cinema into another place”
Fabien Riggall, Future Shorts
“Beautiful viola and flamenco guitar playing” Ben Davis, Time Out.
