I would like to see a new concept in bars... Bring Your Own Beer! No drink sales licence required. There's a BYOB curry house in Sturminster Newton who are always rammed to prove it works.
So, get a venue that is run AND owned by a consortium of musicians or artists which is set up for live audio visual events - include a decent house p.a., lights and projectors etc. Decent stage, proper acoustics, nice decor.
You could then either charge a fee to the promoters, who would then set an entrance fee; or the venue could charge on the door. Punters bring their own drinks of choice saving them money.
In theory, a small door entry/promoters fee would cover running costs/overheads and staff wages. Obviously, the bar could also sell soft drinks and bar food to add profits to the pie.
If it was run by a consortium of enough people who could contribute to the day to day running (sound/light/promo/design/bar/door) to lower overheads, the profits made could then be channeled straight back into the venue, and maybe at the end of the year all "members" could then get a small dividend back for their hard work.
Who wants to chip in and buy a proper good venue then? I hear they still haven't done anything with the old Ice Rink...
