Posted by Old School Is the current trend for the leg position to be knees and toes turned out (away from the horse) about 50% to 60%, with no knee touching the saddle? I was taught (apparently old-school) to have my toes almost straight forward, balls of the foot on the stirrup and ankle flexed slightly inward; thus applying pressure with the entire calf muscle. Knees were to be resting against the saddle, without pinching, so the thigh was firmly againt the saddle, as well. Also, proper hand position was for the thumbs to be turned in slightly at a natural 35% degree tilt, similar to that of the slope of the withers. I'm seeing a lot of straight up and down, thumbs up (which makes the hands looks hard/severe to me) hands. I've not had an opportunity to simply spend time watching at shows to see what style is currently fashionable and/or winning equitation classes. Consequently, I'm not sure if what I am seeing is the result of poor training… or what.

I have begun riding again after 20 years, and am seeing some leg and hand positions that seem foreign to my eye.
