Just like humans, horses can get nervous at shows as well. The atmosphere of a show is completely different than that of a barn. Everything is louder and busier, there are new things to look at and plenty of other horses.
Not knowing you or your horse, I don't know the history behind this. Has your horse been to shows before, or is he new to them? Would he be considered green over jumps or fairly experienced?
A lot of factors come into play at a show, but it could be as simple as your horse needing more exposure at shows. Going to a show not necessarily to compete, but to take in the scenery and get used to what happens.
