Posted by Katie Half seat, as defined by Wikipedia, is when "the rider's seat bones are lifted out of the saddle, and only the pelvis has contact." It is used for jumping when you may need your seat riding towards potentially spooky fences (as opposed to 2-point position, where the only two points making contact with your horse are your legs), sharp turns, riding downhill or collecting a horses stride. Riders in the half seat position will have almost the same body position as they do when sitting the canter, however their shoulders will be slightly more forward and their pelvis will be rotated forward slightly. In your case, the other rider likely was using a half seat position to collect the horse. Horses that used to race are notorious for speeding around the ring on the forehand. Take care, Katie
