Posted by Katie Absolutely not! Many horses make successful transitions from being trained western to english, english to western or even between other disciplines! (My boyfriend has a western-trained horse, which I ride english, and that he also drives!). While some horses may naturally be suited to a certain discipline (you don't generally see, for example, thoroughbreds trained western because of their natural spookiness / sensitivity). This is not set in concrete however... there are some thoroughbreds who are perfectly happy being ridden western. What matters is this: When making the transition with your horse between disciplines, you must remain patient with the horse (they're learning a new skill or skills) and your cues must be consistent. Your new equipment (ie: saddle, bridle, bit, etc) must fit the horse properly so as not to cause discomfort. If you're unsure of any training methods in the new discipline, please do your research and find a reputable trainer to help you along. It will be well worth it. Take care and good luck, Katie
