Posted by Katie Getting nervous is common for anyone who competes. There are a few ways to ease any tension and nervousness - different things work for different people. What have you tried so far? Taking deep breaths can help. I know it might sound weird, but a lot of people forget to breathe properly when they get nervous - some people even hold their breath! Make a point of reminding yourself to take deep breaths at certain spots around the ring (you can even figure out where beforehand, when you walk the course!). Become a strong, confident rider. Confidence and relaxation comes in knowing you can do the job you've set out to do. Taking lessons with a good instructor or coach is a big help, and having a forgiving pony (or horse!) is always a nice thing. Maybe take some lessons on a pony who won't normally refuse a jump (one that is very well-trained) to help boost your confidence. Try to pinpoint exactly what makes you nervous or tense and work towards confronting it. Are the jumps too high? Are they scary looking? Are you on a skittish horse? Do you feel like you're showing at a level above what you should be right now? Once you can pinpoint exactly what brings on the nerves, you can then try to solve it by taking baby-steps. Work with an easy-going, well-trained horse. Gradually increase the size of jumps when you're comfortable and confident. Downgrade the level of showing for the time being until you're confident again - it'll be another great pick-me-up for you! But above all... know that a little bit of nervousness is healthy. It's what keeps you on your toes. Try to refocus that nervousness into confidence - turn your fear into a challenge and beat that challenge! Take care & good luck, Katie
