my name is hayley and i'm 12 years old. i've been riding for about 4 years and this week i roed this liver chestnut thoroughbred/warmblood cross. hes about 17.1 hands and he used to be a three day eventer and did pre-lim showing. hes an AMAZING jumper, although his stride is much too long, he took 2 strides on a 4 stride line. my barn manager came out and asked me why i don't show. i told her it was because i get freaked out because i can't hear what their telling me to do, so i've only done 2 shows, and they were about 3 years ago. she asked me to show jedi in the markham fair because "not many people can ride him like you" according to janet, the manager. so i'm showing him in the fair, but i've got a question and i want as many opinions as possible. my instructer always tells me to half-halt before jumps because i'm going too fast, but its so hard to tell on a horse like im. i feel more comfortable letting him go "fast" and its not like hes out of control when i let him choose the speed. for the show i need to know if i should let him go fast, or half-halt all the time. he does nicer jumps when i let him go fast, he never goes deep though. sinci i've never been in a REAL show, i was wondering if anyone knows what would get me better marks with the judges
