Hi Jill,
I would go along with your trainer's advice. At this stage of your young horse's career, the lesson he's learning and the experience he or she is gaining at the shows is what is most important. Judges like different things and with hunter divisions, being so subjective, it's difficult to know what will please each judge. You and your trainer are better off concentrating on bringing your mount along in a slow, steady pace, giving him/her the confidence that will help to bring home the ribbons in time. Each horse show and each class at that show is different, with the talent exhibited surely not the same. A trip that might win in one class, might not measure up to the rounds put in during another class with stiffer competition. Everything is relative. At this point, work on educating your horse as a whole. Ribbons will come when your mount demonstrates winning form along with a calm, confident attitude.
