Posted by mike wakerly sad. i thought these hinge problems were over when the 5300 died, and now i discover this sad site. well before i knew where to get replacements, i cracked open the case and yanked the slimy critters out. so this is what i found. i went to lowendmac.com and found a list of apple dealers / parts sellers. (you will ahve to do this yourself). i emailed every one of them and asked for a pair of clutches. well i got a variety of responses back... however the best was from... macresq.com.... $50 a hinge. still MUCH MORE than i would rather pay, but they were very nice and since i have already cracked the display open.. i needed to get these quickly =) plus it has a 90 day warranty, cool. also they seem to stock a lot of clutches for older models. call or email them if it isn't on the site. pbparts.com... is too expensive for me. although actually, if you have a WALLSTREET, they have some deal where they repair your hinges with their own parts for about $90. misc apple dealers..... i pestered the folks at a repair shop in NYC mentioned earlier. they politely told me they couldn't sell parts, not in the parts business, and that apple sortof holds them back. however, if you are persistent, this is my advice: bug REPAIR shops to just order you the part (that is, if you're like me and dont want to pay $200 for someone else to have all the fun with the nake powerbook =). eventually, if they're cool, they'll help you out and order it. (they agreed to sell me each clutch for something like $45 each plus shipping, not bad considering most other unnamed dealers/repair shops wanted $200-$220 a set). (however, macresq was quicker =) anyway... thats about all i can think of. i havent yet repaired it but getting the hinges is the hardest part anyway so who cares! cheers, Link: macresq
