The above link leads to a rather long, but well written and quite interesting story about how four college-age Spanish girls began smoking. It’s actually quite superior to most similar stories I’ve seen in English and I recommend it to any of you who can read that language. Particularly good is the middle part of the story where Trinidad describes her own gradual (and initially very reluctant) seduction into the habit.
A quick summary for those who don’t read Spanish (though this does not do justice to the story):
Trinidad starts smoking the odd cigarette while spending most of the summer of 2006 in the countryside with her very pro-smoking Grandmother (who had been unsuccessfully pushing her to smoke since she was 14). Because neither her parents nor best friends smoked, she really wasn’t all that interested. She finally gave in when she found herself the odd person out during a visit by a young aunt who smoked Vogues; a long thin cigarette which intrigued her because they seemed very refined and elegant. Though Trinidad very gradually came to enjoy smoking the odd Vogue and discovered she could enjoy other brands as well, she still resisted becoming a regular smoker until she returned to school and found that all three of her best friends had also started smoking over the summer. The four of them become smoking fanatics, experimenting with different brands and even the odd cigar and a pipe. One result is that they begin to smoke quite heavily. When Trinidad and the more athletic of her friends start noticing the negative physical effects of all that smoking and are unable to simply cut back a little, they decide to try to “reboot” their smoking habits by temporarily quitting during a long vacation to the other girl’s hometown in Ecuador. The two eventually do start smoking again after returning to Spain. Trinidad settles into a very satisfactory pack a week habit, while the other girl becomes a social smoker. Their other two friends remain much heavier smokers (half a pack to a pack a day).
The story is presented as a true account and mostly comes across as quite realistic and believable, including a photo of (I assume) Trinidad after the last chapter. The possible exception is that it does seem quite a coincidence that four best friends would all start smoking over the same summer, particularly as they did so completely independently from one another (and in fact try to hide their smoking from each other when they first get back to school).
